His politics were right wing but as far as I know he was never a bigot. In most of his films where native Americans were concerned he was one of the few that portrayed them as the victims that they really were. He was very sympathetic to their plight. Blacks and Hispanics were always treated as equals, not because it was correct but because that was how he really felt.
