The ancient Romans had a custom of deifying their emperors after their death. This, by the way, was in contrast to the kingdoms of the eastern part of the empire who worshiped their kings as living gods. The only two women to come to mind that were deified were Livia, the wife of Augustus and Drusilla, the sister of Caligula. Today, Livia is mostly remembered for the portrait drawn of her in the series, I Claudius. However this is a work of fiction, and her character was nothing like the character that was portrayed in the play. The author had to have a "villain" and so he used Livia. However the real Livia Drusilla was one of the great ladies of Rome. She was the first woman honored with the title Augusta. She incorporated all the Roman values of a wife in her character. She was also one of Augustus' top advisers, as because of her family connections, she knew the character of many of the people surrounding her husband. She was smart and clever, as attested to the quotes attributed to her, and she was said to have been a keen gardener developing a new strain of figs, that bore her name. She was also known for her generosity. She is said to have supplied dowries for impoverished fathers so they could marry off their daughters.
Appias drusilla was created in 1777.
