The Big Three, or Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, had children with mortals. These children, or demigods, were much more powerful than other demigods. They were too unpredictable. That lead to World War II. After the war, the Big Three made a pact on the River Styx to never sire another kid. They are also known as the eldest gods. In Rick Riordan's books Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, there is the Great Prophecy that warns of their children either saving or destroying Olympus. Zeus fell off the wagon when he sired a daughter, Thalia Grace, who is an immortal huntress of Aremis. Poseidon fell off the wagon when he sired Percy Jackson. He is the child of the prophecy: A half-blood of the eldest godsShall reach sixteen against all odds And see the world in endless sleep The hero's soul, cursed blade shall reapA single choice shall end his days Olympus to preserve or raze. Raze means to destroy, obliterate, annhilate, turn to rubble, etc. This is based on Rick Riordan's books.
The Big Three were an actual part of mythology in the way that they did exist. There were three brothers, who divided the earth amongst themselves. However, they were never actually known as the 'Big Three'. They never had a pact not to have any children with mortals; that is all the creation of the author Rick Riordan for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
