If you play at firered, OF COURSE there is no mantine, because Mantine is at Pokemon leaf green
The Tanoby Ruins is the area where the Tanoby Chambers are located which is the far southern portion of Seven Island.
To solve the mystery of the Tanoby ruins (The ruins you were talking about), you need to solve something called the Tanoby Key. Before the Tanoby Key, the ruins are virtually useless, with no Pokemon to catch or items to collect, but after the Tanoby Key, there are All 28 types of Unown are released, and you can catch them. Nothing happens if you catch all 28, but its fun if you like to collect different forms of the same pokemon! Otherwise, just catch one for your pokedex entry. As for the Tanoby Key itself, I won't spoil it for you, because even if you want help, there's not much fun in getting a spoiler, but I will say this: It involves pushing boulders into holes. As for location, on your way to the Tanoby Ruins, you will find a grassy patch just to your left. At first, it looks like nothing, but at closer look, you will see a cave opening. This is the Tanoby Key. Have Fun!
The Tanoby Ruins is a very special place. You can catch Unown there! But, in order to make Unown apear there, you must unlock them. To do this, go to Sevault Canyon on Seven Ilsand. Find the Tanoby Key there, and solve the rock puzzle with the HM Strength. Once you do, there will be a small earthquake. Now, go to the Tanoby Ruins, choose a ruin, and Unown will apear like wild Pokemon! And the best part is, you can have as many as you want!
Diamond & Pearl: You can catch a Poliwhirl with a super rod on route 225. or route 225 surfing. or route 227. <(Surfing). and route 228 while surfing.
It opens all of the tanoby ruins, and now you can go to the tanoby ruins, and catch unowns, a VERY rare pokemon. But they are common. Try to get one of every letter.
