Hogan is Navajo for medicine man. A medicine man in any Indian tribe is a shaman. Shamans use spiritual and medicinal herbs for healing and for interpreting signs to come. They also speak to spirits.
She cannot be 100% white and be so brown. You have to have African heritage to produce any shade of brown from the very light to the darkest brown/black means that African ancestry is present!! That's not necessarily true. She could have gotten an olive complexion through Spanish or Mediterranean heritage which, go back a couple thousand years, could have come from Arab, Jewish, Persian or African genes. That said, even some Slavs have darker complexions through distant Asian (East or Southern Asian) heritage.
There may have been a few African Americans who were better off after the Reconstruction but the majority of them were worse off. While they were technically "free", they were treated as second class citizens. Most of them were released from their lives as slaves and found themselves without shelter and food.
The author admits that he doesn't know much about history of African countries, but hopes to add them once he learns more. That's why some countries have been added as time went on.
