A professional makeup artist will usually need classes in order to get a Cosmetology license and be registered with the board of health where they intend to work (regulations vary from state to state) and is usually needed only for hair. Formal education is not needed - it is based on talent and ability. If its special effects makeup or prosthetics (like monster makeup) for the movies, some studios might require an art degree to be hired (for many complicated reasons) but usually a High school diploma is fine. If your good and can prove it, you will be hired regardless of what your education is.

There are several types of classes that a person may want to take in order to become a make-up artist. If an individual wants to become a beautician who does make-up for normal individuals, he or she may take cosmetology classes. If a person wants to be a make-up artist for movie and film, he or she would need to take college level theater courses. There are college theater courses which are specifically for theatrical make-up.

If you just want to sell product at a department store, you need to know how to do makeup and how to present yourself well enough to get hired by the store's makeup department. (A department store's makeup department doesn't actually belong to the store--the makeup company leases space in it, so you have to be hired by them directly.)

If you want to do makeup in a salon, you need an esthetician license or cosmetologist license. If your interest is primarily makeup and Skin Care rather than hair, get the esthetician license--cosmetology school spends very little time talking about makeup or nails because they've got a very limited time with you and they spend most of it teaching hair. (Also, esthetics school is a lot less expensive than cosmetology school, and doesn't take as long.)

If you want to do makeup for television or film, you need to belong to Local 706 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. This takes some doing--you have to work for almost nothing on low-budget movies and stage plays until you meet the Local's employment criteria, and then they'll take you.
