In fact Ash had to earn pikachu's trust, which came with the gigantic spearow attack. Spearows do not like Pokemon with trainers apparently and can really do a lot of damage even if they have a type disadvantage, especially if they really gang up with a whole lot of different flocks, against one lone pikachu, who was ignoring his trainer.
Pikachu almost died, but Ash did earn pikachu's trust.
