There were many ideas for Sonic before he actually became Sonic; some original ideas were making him a bunny, fox, and dog. There was an internal contest in SEGA; the two choices that they narrowed it down to were an armadillo and a hedgehog.

∙ 13y agoSonic was originally going to have fangs and belonged in a band. He also was to have a grilfriend named Madonna. However Madeline Schroedner, head of Sega of America, wanted to soften the character up for an American audience.
