It helps show the eeriness and ominous feeling inside the chamber. But when Harry is at the feasts, it is bright and cheerful. It makes you feel like this is a good time and that Harry is happy. When deep in the woods following the spiders, it is dark. Most likely to set the scary feeling of being in the woods and show the mysteriousness of it all. What did Hagrid mean by saying "Follow the spiders?" I think lighting has a lot to do with the overall feeling of the Chamber of Secrets.
