Throughout the first five books of the series Draco is portrayed as proud, cocky and bigoted through his frequent teasing and bullying of those less well of than himself, such as Harry and the Weasleys, along with his belief in pure-blood supremecy. Initially, Draco seems to be something of a spoiled brat and presents an element of cowardice, particularly through constantly being flanked by Crabbe and Goyle, both of whom are much larger than himself. JK Rowling has said that Draco 'is not a nice man' who is 'very capable of compartmentalising his life'. Nevertheless, a distinct moral goodness is seen in Draco's character in 'Half-Blood Prince' when he is unable to perfom the Killing Curse, and, according to Rowling, Draco 'did a lot of growing up' in this book.

He regards other people, including his own followers, as disposable tools. Voldemort fears his own death more than anything as he does not beileve there is anything worse than death.
