Best is very subjective. That depends on how much you are shredding, what you are shredding, and how much you are willing to spend.

(Low Security) Strip-cut use rotating knives to cut strips of various widths depending on how the shredder is designed, and as long as the original sheet of paper (~34 shredded pieces). This Type of shredder offers the least security for the secure destruction of Sensitive material and is not recommended by security experts for the proper destruction of bank statements, credit card statements, credit cards, and checks. Do to the ease of being able to reform the original document from the strips.

(Recommended Medium security) Cross-cut shredders use two counter rotating blades to cut rectangular, parallelogram, or diamond-shaped shreds. This is the most common and most popular shredder on the market today as it offers a high level of security (~300 shredded pieces) a modest price tag.

(High Security)Micro Cut Shredder (Cross-cut variant)Using similar technology as the Cross-cut shredder the micro cut shredder shreds paper into smaller near indistinguishable pieces of papers (ups to 3.5 times more on average ~1300 shredded pieces). However the design of this shredder raises the price significantly from a "standard" Cross-cut shredder to double (in some cases triple) the price.

There are several other less common shredders out there that you most likely will not be able to find in a standard office supply store:

* Particle-cut shred tiny square or circular pieces. * Disintegrators and granulators Cut paper until until they are able to fall through a mesh screen.

* Hammermills force paper through a metal screen where it subsequently cut.

* Pierce and Tear Blades pierce the paper and then tear it apart. * Grinders Grind paper until until it falls through a mesh screen. You may also want to keep in mine these other features as well when deciding on a home or office shredder.

Jam proof shredders - Prevent jams by analyzing paper thickness and prevent the paper from entering the shredders blades where it can become stuck.

Safety sensor - Generally a metal bar attached at the mouth of the shredder that when touched my a conductive object (like a human hand) will break the circuit and immediately shut off the shredder.

Silent operation - Noise reduction.

Energy savings - Shredder has a sleep mode and wont constantly draw a high level of power until it is needed.

Mess reduction - The shredder features an automatic cleaning cycle that prevents paper build-up on cutters.
