If it is a Quick Effect, then it can be used in either player's turn. You can identify a Quick Effect when they say they negate activations or summons, they have to be spell speed 2 to do this, which is why they can be used in the opponent's turn. Stardust Dragon's negation effect is one example. Also any other monster effect that specifically says it can be activated in the opponent's turn, or both turns, is a Quick Effect. Examples - Injection Fairy Lily, Amazoness Scouts. If it is a Trigger, then it will activate whenever the activation condition is met. For example, Giant Rat, will activate when destroyed by battle, regardless of turn.If it is not Quick, and it is not Trigger, then it is almost surely an Ignition Effect, and can only be used in your own Main Phases. In general, most 'once per turn' effects mean once per yourturn as they are Ignition Effects.
