-The Baudelaire's parents die in a fire
-They stay with a family friend until they find a legal guardian to look after them
-The legal guardian ends up being an evil man (Count Olaf) who is after their fortune
Count Olaf tried to get the fortune by marrying Violet in The Marvelous Marriage
