Since the only account of her life comes from a reverend who knew her, and from the date she died, it is not clear whether Hattie May Wiatt was 5 years old or 6 when she died from diphtheria. She lived from 1878 to 1884 in Philadelphia.

Her baby sister Annie also died from the disease, and their remains were later moved to a family plot of the Ball family.

Hattie May became famous because she bequeathed her savings, 57 cents, to the Church where she attended Sunday school. She inspired others to contribute to the building of a new Sunday school and church, Grace Baptist Church, which over the next century became Temple University and Good Samaritan Hospital.
