Thomson only discovered the electron. After initially researching cathode rays, he dabbled a bit, but was only re-interested in it about year later, because of another scientist's trial. This "other" scientist - using a collector - found that cathode rays had negative charges. Thomson, his cathode ray curiosity renewed, decided to experiment more. His experiment was also coincidentally with cathode rays and collectors. However, his specific experiment was used to discern the mass difference of the collector after firing cathode rays at it; this is what makes him important in history. He fully showed the existence of the electron (a formerly non-existant, smaller than an atom, subparticle) and formed a model based on it - famously known as the plum pudding model.
