This was at the time when African Americans were treated as second class citizens.As a young child she took dancing lessons and excelled. By the age of 14 she had choreographed a stage performance of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Aged 16 she was a dancer in a dance company.
In 1943 she was acclaimed outstanding performer in the first production of an African Dance Festival. The audience included Eleanor Roosevelt.
