Josephine was brought up by her parents (Haitian immigrants) to have a belief in her own self worth. She was a happy outgoing child. This was at the time when African Americans were treated as second class citizens.As a young child she took dancing lessons and excelled. By the age of 14 she had choreographed a stage performance of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Aged 16 she was a dancer in a dance company.
In 1943 she was acclaimed outstanding performer in the first production of an African Dance Festival. The audience included Eleanor Roosevelt.
Her first Broadway performance was in 1945 in a production called Blue Holiday in which she sang as well as danced.
