Dame Elizabeth's jewelry collection was sold by Christie's in New York during the month of December 2011. The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor consisted of numerous auctions devoted to her collections of jewelry, art, haute couture, decorative arts, costumes and memorabilia. The bulk of Dame Elizabeth's jewelry collection was sold in four auctions.
The first auction was titled, The Legendary Jewels consisting of 80 lots of Miss Taylor's most iconic pieces and was held during the evening of December 13, 2011. The Legendary Jewels sold for a total of $115,932,000 US, setting numerous records. The highest price was paid for $11,842,500 for the La Peregrina Pearl (discovered in the Gulf of Panama, early 1500's). The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond (formerly known as The Krupp) sold for $8,815,500. The Taj Mahal Diamond (circa 1627) sold for $8,815,500 as well.
The second and third jewelry auctions consisting of 188 pieces from Dame Elizabeth's collection sold for a combined total of $21,303,575. The highest price paid was $1,482,500 for an antique natural pearl and diamond necklace (circa 1860) that was a gift from Richard Burton in 1968.
The fourth auction was Christie's first ever online auction consisting of 617 lots jewelry out of 965 lots offered. The jewelry sold for $7,540,200.
This figure does not include the value of pieces she bequeathed to people in her will. So the total value of Dame Elizabeth's jewelry collection as it existed at the time of her death will never be known. I would conservatively add another $5,000,000 to have a ballpark figure.
A conservative estimate of the value of her jewelry was "leaked" in 2002 when her book, My Love Affair with Jewelry, came out. The range was $80 to 120 million US. The figure from 1994 (released in 1996) during her divorce from Larry Fortensky included her art and was listed as $102.77 million, which was probably a low figure to decrease Fortensky's chances of getting more money if he succeeded in breaking their prenuptial agreement (he did not succeed btw).
