Until he was twenty-one (21) years old, Molière (January 15, 1622 - February 17, 1673) may have wanted to hold down a job within the royal court or within the legal profession. But as of 1643, he chose the theater and pursued that career until his death.

Specifically, Paris' most famous playwright, performer and director was born into the merchant class. His father, Jean Poquelin, expected him to follow his footsteps in working within the French royal court. Molière tried that route and then that of law under his real name, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin. But he always was drawn to the theater and made that his sole profession as an adult, under the subsequently world-famous stage name of Molière.
