Nathan Hale was a captain. He was a failed spy and although he contributed very little physically to the war as he was caught and hung rather quickly because he spoke too much, he did participate a great deal as a psychological rallying point for the American soldiers. Although the British did not allow him to write the customary letters to his family before being hung his bravery in accepting death and his patriotism were a tremendous psychological boost for the Americans. However, it is doubtful he said the exact phrase he is credited with there is no doubt he was a very brave man. He was an amazing man and a true hero.

A new biography was published in 2008, entitled Nathan Hale: The Life and Death of America's First Spy , by M. William Phelps.

I'd like to add that many believe Nathan Hale's last words to be "i only regret that i have but one life to lose for my country
