Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was a Spanish explorer and the first governor of Florida. He is best known for founding St. Augustine in 1565, the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States. Menéndez sought to establish Spanish presence in North America, primarily to counter French influence and to convert Native Americans to Christianity.
