She told them that she was saving a seat for her master, Barty Crouch Sr. In reality, Barty Crouch Jr was sitting on that seat under the invisibility cloak. While there, he stole Harry's wand from his back pocket. Winky, who was hiding her eyes as she was terrified of heights, failed to notice this.

Winky claimed she didn't know to do such a thing, but Barty Crouch Sr released her from service in order to save face.
