To prove to his Aunt Mimi that she overlooked his potential, among other things. He also didn't want to spend his life working a regular job; his friends who had done so "looked like old men in six weeks". When he saw girls screaming for Elvis Presley and other early rockers, he told himself "That's a good job."

John Lennon first became popular with his skiffle group in Liverpool called "The Quarry Men" which was named after their school. And then his band eventually evolved into The Beatles with him, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. It was then, that he, along with the others became famous worldwide.
In the early days, whatever it took, as advised by Brian Epstein. "Wear a suit? Yeah, I'll wear a suit. I'll wear a bloody balloon if someone's gonna pay me." After The Beatles became famous, he became jaded, telling longtime friend Peter Shotton "I've sold my soul to the Devil." The Beatles were a long-running media story, and anything they did in public became news... and they each became tired of it.
With Yoko Ono, Lennon began doing publicity stunts (their honeymoon became a week-long public event, called a "Bed-In") in the name of peace, reasoning that since the media were going to report on anything they did, they might as well "hog the headlines and make people laugh". Some people believed Lennon was trying to deliberately sabotage his own public image, and in a way he was. "We'll gladly play the world's clowns, if it will get people to think about peace instead of war."
During the later Beatles days, Lennon counted on the Apple Corps press office (headed by former journalist Derek Taylor) to promote his latest records, and explain what he and Ono were doing to the media, if they couldn't do it themselves. By the end of the decade, they had hired Les Perrin as their publicist.
After they moved to America, radio show host Elliott Mintz (who had played and favorably reviewed Ono's first solo album, when radio had mostly ignored or vilified it) became their publicist. He continues in that position today.
John Lennon's birth date was October 9, 1940.
