Johnnie Ray became deaf in his left ear following a mishap that occurred during a Boy Scout "blanket toss." In later years, Ray performed wearing a hearing aid.

Johnnie Ray underwent an operation in New York in 1958 that he and his surgeon hoped would restore his hearing. Unfortunately the surgeon botched the procedure and his hearing worsened, thereby making it much harder for him to communicate with musicians who backed him and with record producers and sound engineers.
