The Governess
Julie Andrews
This is a puzzle. Douglas says that he was 'ten years older' than the Governess. He then says he first met the Governess when he came down from his second summer at Trinity. (p117 Oxford World's Classics edn; approx p3 of the story). On p119, however, he says that the Governess took up service 'in the schoolroom' then applied for the job at Bly when she was twenty. She must therfore have been about 20 or 21 when she started as the Governess there. So had she been working for c.nine years there before she met Douglas? That cannot be because Miles is already at School and we know the events with Miles and Flora happened just after Miles waas expelled. (Clearly, if we had to wait about nine years, Miles and Flora would at the least be post-adolescent and post'School'.) Can someone cleverer than I work out what is going on here?
Mary did not raise Elizabeth. She was raised in Hatfield House by a governess appointed by her father Henry VIII. Mary lived in the country with her husband.
Alice is taught at home by a governess. In Victorian England it was common for middle and upper class families to hire a governess to take care of their daughters' education within the family home, while their sons went to boarding school. From the text of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland we can see that Alice has attended school (a day school, not a boarding school) but that she doesn't at the time the book is set."'I've been to a day-school, too,' said Alice; 'you needn't be so proud as all that.'"However, she is clearly being taught somewhere."'But then,' thought Alice, 'shall I never get any older than I am now? That'll be a comfort, one way-never to be an old woman- but then-always to have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn't like that!'"In Through the Looking Glass, which is set six months later, it is made apparent that Alice has a governess."'That would never do, I'm sure,' said Alice: 'the governess would never think of excusing me lessons for that. If she couldn't remember my name, she'd call me "Miss!" as the servants do.'"
