Ash had caught Charmander in the episode that is titled "Charmander - The Stray Pokémon," Charmander had originally belonged to Damien, a Pokémon Trainer that had abandoned the Pokémon and lied claiming he would return for it but didn't, Ash and his friends went to go rescue it since it was endangered of dying due to standing in the rain on a rock waiting for Damien's return and after Damien saw Charmander use its Flamethrower to attack and beat Team Rocket, he returns back for it and mentions how abandoning it made it stronger and when he attempts to recall Charmander the Pokémon rejects Damien as its trainer and instead chooses to go with Ash.
