The term GI stands for Government Issued or I have also heard it stands for Government infantry.

The Joe is a particularly common name based on a Catholic custom of naming male children using the surname Joseph followed by their commonly used name such as Robert, Thomas, James etc. In the military the enlisted men were always identified by their first name/last name with little regard to middle names. When these men who thus far as civilians had been called Tommy, Bobby or Jimmy joined the military they became known as Joseph or "Joe" for short. Upon leaving the service many continued to use the name Joe they had become accustomed to while others returned to their common names. This was especially true for brothers. It created some confusion when Joseph Michael Peters and Joseph Robert Peters, brothers, previously called Mike or Bob, both came out of the service being called Joe Peters.
