R2-D2 is a/an Astromech droid
R2D2 was Luke's robot friend from the start. R2D2 played Leia's plea for help to Luke and Ben(Obi-Wan) Kenobi. R2D2 has many gadgets on him, like a tazer and many electrical plugs to hook up with enemy security systems. R2D2 is almost every Star Wars fan's favorite robot.
R2D2, the robotic character that communicates only in electronic beeps and whirs, appears in all six Star Wars films, as well as much of its related spin-off media. He plays a critical role in the plot of the series, from helping repair Queen Amidala's ship in Episode I, to joining the rescue mission for Chancellor Palpatine in Episode III, to transporting the Death Star plan throughout Episode IV, to assisting in Han Solo's rescue from Jabba the Hutt in Episode VI.
In the movies it doesn't stand for anything in particular. But George got the idea from a roll of film while making American Grafitti labled, R2D2 or, Roll Two Dialouge Two.
