Ares helped Percy so that Percy wouldn't think of who else might gain alot if the gods went to war! Ares is the God of War but because he HELPED Percy, Percy Annabeth, and Grover thought the the main person who would gain from the war is Hades but after they find out that Hades helm is gone as well and Hades demanded the sword and Percy realized why the backpack was so heavy he opended it and there was the sword he then put two and two together a figured out that Ares had tricked him because he was the one to give them the backpack the sword was like the pen so Ares knew that if he helped Percy they would go to the underworld and get blamed even more for stealing the bolt when it appeared in the bag. Ares knew that the sword would appear when the heros got to the underworld so why not help speend them on their way so they get caught by Hades and gives Zues the evidence that he needs even though it is fake to start the biggest war ever! one that would make the trojan war look like a water ballon fight!! And that looks really good to the God of war!
