The equations are used to work out how the ship can deliver its medical cargo. The ship has a limited amount of fuel, and no way to get more. If the pilot allows the stowaway to stay aboard, the equations show he cannot accomplish his mission, on which many lives depend. They are described as 'cold' because they have no room to consider any emotion the pilot may feel.

Cold equations means that each human being needs so much oxygen to survive so that a hitchhiker on a rocket ship would doom the pilot. As much as a pilot would want to save another human being, it won't work. Even if the pilot were willing to give up his life, unless the hitchhiker was a trained pilot, both would die.
