What does the name Cathy?

Cathy is a short form of Catherine; it is actually not clear what it's original meaning was. One theory is it comes from Greek Hekaterine meaning "each of two," and another is that it comes from the name of Hecate, a goddess. There are other, less plausible theories. In the early Middle Ages people associated it with the Greek word "katharos" meaning "pure," and this is the etymology that most people prefer.
