Red matter was an unstable substance that was first seen in the 24th century.

When a star went supernova and threatened the entire Milky Way Galaxy in 2387, Ambassador Spock used his spacecraft, the Jellyfish, to inject red matter into the star, creating an artificial black hole which devoured the star. Unfortunately, Spock was unable to complete his task before the supernova destroyed Romulus.

I'm not an expert, but when I think of red matter (related to Star Trek of course) I think of the possibility it actually may exist, but we didn't find it yet.

I'm thinking of a small orb with a high gravitational force, pulling other particles towards it. But when the particles get too close, it's electro-magnetic field starts either pushing them away or pulling even harder on them (red matter is more likely to be positive as its full of heavy metals collapsed into a singularity. Positive on positive will push each other away, positive on negative attracts each other). When the particles are getting pushed away, the gravitation and opposite magnetic force make them vibrate very hard and lets them turn into energy which will be added to the energy of the red matter itself. The colour of the red matter can be explained by the specific metals collapsed into a singularity, the combination will decide the red colour.

My opinion is that red matter doesn't work completely like black holes, but does make a singularity.

I don't know if this makes any sense, and please add information if you know more about it (and not just the science-fiction of star trek, because I know that though) .
