Among their similarities, they are both extremely jaded with respect to the spirit of the Games, and to the system that endorses it. They have both won the Games primarily by cleverness and luck, rather than combat ability. Where the differ is that Haymitch is pragmatic to a fault, whereas Katniss maintains an idealistic approach to her challenges. Haymitch has been "broken" by his association with the Games, and thus willingly participates in the Capitol's schemes as a practical matter, while Katniss tries to maintain her rebellious attitude. Yet, at the end of the third book, Katniss begins to approach the practical apathy of Haymitch.
