A house elf named Dobby turns up in Harry Potter's bedroom and tells him not to return to Hogwarts because of an evil plot that has been set in place. Harry insists that he must and Dobby is forced to take drastic measures to try and stop him. He stopped all of Harry's letters and, when Harry refused to say he wasn't going back to Hogwarts, dropped a cake on the Dursley's dinner guests which resulted in Harry being locked in his room and told he was never going back to Hogwarts.

Ron Weasley and his brothers Fred and George rescue him in their flying car and they take him back to the Burrow where he spends the remainder of his summer. Dobby once again tries to stop Harry by blocking the barrier at King's Cross, making Harry and Ron miss the train. So they fly the car to school.

Meanwhile Ginny Weasley finds a diary that was placed among her school books by Lucius Malfoy. She begins to pour her heart into the diary which once belonged to Tom Riddle a.k.a Lord Voldemort. A memory of Tom when he was sixteen talks back to her and after time he begins to posses her. Tom makes Ginny open the Chamber of Secrets and he unleashes the Basilisk, a giant serpent which can kill someone by looking directly into their eyes. Several muggle-born students are attacked but none die because they only saw the reflection of the eyes and so were only petrified.

Hermione discovers the secret but is petrified before she can tell Ron and Harry, who later find all the information they need in a piece of paper hidden in her hand. Ginny Weasley is taken into the Chamber and is expected to die there, her only hope is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who had been bragging about how he knew where the entrance was. When tasked with attempting to rescue her, he runs away. That is until Harry and Ron force him to help them.

Harry, Ron and Lockhart go into the Chamber, Lockhart attempts to curse the boys with Ron's broken wand so the spell backfired and brought down the roof, forcing Harry to face the Basilisk on his own. Dumbledore's phoenix blinded the Basilisk and brought Harry the sorting hat which Harry pulled the sword of Godric Gryffindor out of, allowing him to kill the Basilisk. Harry then used one of the Basilisk's fangs to stab the diary, which saved Ginny. In doing so, Harry destroyed the first of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes - although he was unaware.
