Percy Jackson, a 12-year-ole 'delinquent', finds out that he's a demigod. He travels with his friend, Grover Underwood, to a place called Camp Half-Blood.
Percy soon realises that because somebody has stolen Zeus's Lightning Bolt, and his father Poseidon is blamed, he must complete a quest to help his father.
Percy, Grover, and a girl named Annabeth wander through seemingly impossible tasks, but obviously solving it in clever and hilarious ways. Eventually, Percy goes to Mount Olympus (the new entrance is at Empire State Building) and finds that he has his Lightning Bolt in a bag that the God of War, Ares, gave him. This soon becomes suspicious because the Oracle (the mummy who predicts the future) at Camp Half-Blood's prophecy's last line was 'shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend'. Percy thinks that the prophecy meant Ares, but it turns out to be Luke, someone who does call Percy a friend.

In Chapter 6 of "The Lightning Thief," Percy Jackson is given a special drink called nectar, which is a divine beverage that can heal and invigorate demigods. It is significant because it highlights the unique nature of Percy’s identity as a half-blood and emphasizes the connection between mortals and the gods. The drink not only provides him with strength but also symbolizes the allure and danger of the world of gods and monsters he is entering. This moment serves as a turning point in his understanding of his heritage and the magical realm.
