What happened in chapter one of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?

Vernon Durlsey is a normal man who goes to work one day and begins to notice strange things. He worries that they might be connected with his sister in law, Lily Potter who is a witch.

That night, Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall and Rubeus Hagrid leave Lily's orphaned son Harry on the Dursley's doorstep.

They talk about the evil wizard Lord Voldemort who killed Lily and James Potter before trying to kill Harry but was then destroyed. The wizarding world is celebrating and baby Harry is a famous wizard. Dumbledore plans on hiding him at the house of his only living relatives where he can be safe until he is old enough to know what happened.

Chapter one starts by following Vernon Dursley who on his journey to work starts to notice some strange occurrences. At lunch time he hears a whisper about the Potter's and begins to wonder if his sister-in-law is involved. After watching the news he becomes even more concerned, but manages to fall asleep thinking that the Potter's wouldn't bring the Dursleys into it because they knew they didn't get on.

The chapter then turns to Dumbledore and McGonagall.

The previous night, Lord Voldemort killed Lily and James Potter before trying to kill their son. However the curse backfired. Harry survived and whatever happened to Voldemort means he has disappeared. Rubeus Hagrid arrives with baby Harry, who is being given to the only family he has left - the Dursleys. Here, Harry can grow up away from the world that now considers him a hero.
