Elizabeth was quite a liberal in her attitude to dissent! She was threatened through the actions of the papacy and inspite of various legends she treated her religious opponents quite well. It was only those who persisted in their disloyalty who were punished and those sent over from the new Romanist Schools to foment rebellion and treason in favour of the Pope's Holy War!

Firstly,

These people were given a fortnight to leave England!

If weather interfered they were given an extension.

If they returned they were asked, no more than to take an oath of allegiance to Eliza.

They were asked would they, in the event of an invasion, do their duty?

Would they take up arms against the invaders and defend the queen against her enemies?

Some of the Trent priests were caught twice!

If they persisted or, if they were found actively supporting the Queens enemies, they were given over to due process!
