Virgil Grissom, better known as Gus Grissom, was the second American to enter space. His first space flight was on the Mercury 4 mission, and then on Gemini 3. He was to have been the commander on the Apollo 1 mission but all three crew members were killed during a cockpit fire in a launchpad practice session in January 1967.
