On their way to the castle, they were found by Severus Snape who took them to the dungeons and showed them a Daily Prophet story where muggles had seen them flying. Snape wanted to expel them, but since he is not the head of Gryffindor, he didn't have that power. Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall decide not to expel them, but they are given detention and a letter home. They were told not to break any more rules or they would be expelled.
