William S Burroughs was an American writer 1914-1997 known for surrealist and avant garde prose. He is often referred to as the Father of the "Beats", those authors such as Jack Kerouac, Allan Ginsberg and Gregory Corso who came to prominence in the 1950's. Burrough's best known works include "The Naked Lunch", "The Soft Machine" and the short story collection "Interzone". Well educated and a dapper dresser William Burroughs struggled with heroin addiction for most of his life. His influence on the arts , especially among the artistic and musical underground of New York City, was great.
