Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime... And a manga!

It is based off two kids "Edward Elric" and "Alphonse Elric" looking for a way to ressurect their mother (and get their bodies back) by using a stone (which in the series they say is "Ledgendary") the Philosopher's Stone.

I agree this anime is the best ever. Full Metal Alchemist (FMA) is a hit manga series in Japan. Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse Elric tried to resourect their dearly beloved mother from the dead with human transmutation... it failed terribly, making Edward lose his left leg, and Alphonse's entire body. in order for Edward to get his brother back he exchanged his arm for Al's soul, and binded it to an empty suit of armor. now ed has an right automail arm and a left automail leg (artificial limbs) and they are on a journey to find a way to gain they're origianal bodies back. Edward becomes a state alchemist on order to find more information about the philosipher stone which might indeed have the power to give them their desire. p.s. I LOVE THIS ANIME Also, this anime is about two brothers that try to bring their mom back to life using alchemy, but its forrbidden to try to raise the dead, but they do it anyway, and Ed (older brother) lost an arm and a leg and Al (younger brother) lost his entire body, so Ed put Al's spirit into a suit of armor, and they go on a quest to find the legendary philosopher stone to try to get their bodies back to normal. It's a good anime, though it's kinda gross and scary at some parts, but just a little, and it's funny.

As far as the anime is concerned, Fullmetal Alchemist can be summarized like this: In a world where alchemy developed into a credible science, two brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric are child prodigies. However, Edward has lost his arm and leg and his younger brother Alphonse lost his entire body in an alchemic ritual gone wrong. Now, Edward, fitted with mechanic limbs, and Alphonse, whose soul is attached to a suit of armor, search the world for a mythic artifact known as the Philosopher's Stone, which can give an alchemist powers equal to God and allow them the power to break the alchemic law of Equivalent Exchange; in other words, they can create without sacrificing anything. It was this law that caused the Elric brothers' mishap, for they had committed a serious taboo the night they lost their limbs/body: they had attempted to resurect their dead mother using alchemy (more specifically, a forbidden technique known as Human Transmutation), and, though they had the right ingredients to create a body, they had nothing to exchange for her soul. With the power of the Philosopher's Stone, the Elric brothers intend not to bring their mother back, but to restore each others bodies. Previously driven by selfish reasons, the Elric brothers live only for each other now.

Edward takes it upon himself to become a State Alchemist, a high-ranking alchemist that works for the military. With that position, he would have access to valuable information regarding the Philosopher's Stone and thus find his next lead to attaining it. However, he isn't the only searching. People, and even monsters, seek the Stone for dark intentions. These monsters, known as Homunculi (Singular form: Homunculus), resemble humans but possess supernatural powers. They also represent one of the seven Cardinal Sins, each named after one (Lust, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Pride, Sloth, and Wrath), and they all serve the same master, whom we discover towards the end of the series.

Edward believed at first that he had "grown up" when he joined the military as a State Alchemist at age 14, but as the series progresses he comes to realize the unjust ways of life and that the world really isn't about "Equivalent Exchange" because you don't always get something, or even anything, for what you sacrifice.

There is an ongoing theme of sin/repentance as well as that of "growing up", as most of the characters have in some way, shape, or form committed an act of wrong-doing in their past and either run from it, learned from it, and/or made up for it.

Fullmetal Alchemist literally means 'Alchemist of Steel'. The name was given because Edward had a metal prosthetic arm and leg.

fullmetal alchemist is about two brothers, edward and alphonse elric. their father had left them for unknown reasons when they were very young. a few years later, their mother dies of a terminal illness. the brothers, determined not to live without her, absorb themselves in alchemy, hoping to learn enough to attempt human transmutation, a taboo among alchemists. after training and studying for a year, they try to bring their mother back, but fail. the gate takes edward's left leg and alphonse's whole body. edward then sacrifices his right arm to attach alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. in the end, after all their sacrifices, what they created wasnt their mother. it wasnt even human. edward gets automail, an advanced steel prosthetic, from his childhood friend, winry rockbell, and her grandma pinako. after a year, edward is 12 and alphonse is 11 and they are determined to get their bodies back to the way they were. edward becomes a state alchemist, a dog of the military, and works under colonel roy mustang, the flame alchemist. he goes on missions for the military, but also searches for the legendary alchemic amplifier, the philosopher's stone, that can supposedly surpass the law of equivalent exchange, the basis of alchemy. they journey all over the country, gaining new friends and enemies. after a few years, they realize that they arent the only ones that are searching for the stone.
