What is Sirius Black's relationship to Harry Potter?

Sirius Black is not directly related to Harry but is the best friend of Harry's Father, James Potter. Sirius is the godfather of Harry and attempts to look after Harry throughout the books.

However, they are very distantly related, as is the case with most pureblood families (although Harry's mother was Muggleborn, his father's family was pure). In the very detailed Black Family Tree that J. K. Rowling drew, we can see that Dorea Black married Charlus Potter, thus bringing the Potter family into the House of Black. Also, Harry will be related by marriage since both of Ginny's parents are somehow related to the Blacks (Arthur's mother was a Black before being burnt off the tree for being a blood traitor, and Molly's uncle married a Black).

Sirius Black was the godfather of Harry Potter. Black was one of James Potter's (Harry's father's) best friends.

Sirius was a pure-blood wizard born into the esteemed, if evil, Black family. At Hogwarts, Sirius was sorted into the house of Gryffindor (defying his family's tradition of Slytherin-sorted wizards) and there, he became good friends with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. These friends joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters in the First Wizarding War.

However, Peter Pettigrew betrayed the Potters to Voldemort and framed Sirius for the betrayal and the murder of Peter Pettigrew and 12 Muggles that he killed to hide Peter's escape. Sirius was sent to Azkaban and spent many joyless and long years until he broke out of the prison.

After breaking out of Azkaban, he exposed the lies and betrayal of Pettigrew and became very close to Harry. Soon Sirius rejoined the Order of the Phoenix to fight Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters (again) in the Second Wizarding War.

During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Sirius' own cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, killed him. He briefly appears again through the Resurrection Stone for Harry, along with Lily and James Potter.
