At the University of Oxford a Ph.D. is given the name "D.Phil." It stands for Doctor of Philosophy.

A student will spend the first year of a D.Phil as a PRS ("probationary research student") before applying for full DPhil status. At the end of the first year the student is assessed for suitability and may receive a "continuation" (permission to continue in the program) leading the the submission of a D.Phil thesis and graduation. A normal period for a D.Phil course is three years.
