Usually, training can be referred to as academic &/or technical. Academic training generally requires a core-curriculum of standardized courses not directly associated with the specific major (field) being studied, to give one a "well-rounded" educational background/degree Technical training on the other hand, is generally regarded as more "hands-on" in a specific field with more emphasis on the quality of craftsmenship in a trade. The best of both worlds is considered to be a combination of academic, technical and field experience to truly be competent and confidant in ones chosen area of endeavour.
