The John Wayne Medal was authorized by the U.S. Congress on May 23, 1979. Only one solid gold medal was made and it was presented to the family of John Wayne in 1980. The medal sold to the public was produced in bronze. If you have one dated 1976 or made of gold it is not a U.S. Mint issued coin. The gold versions of the John Wayne Medal are bronze medals which have been plated by a private company and have whatever value you may place upon them. Bronze versions currently sell for $3 to $7. Just days before Wayne lost his battle to cancer he was awarded by Congress an honorary coin that stated:John Wayne, American. His long-time friend and costar in many films, Maureen O'Hara, pushed for the award as a tribute to her friend.

Since it is a replica, it is only worth melt value for the bronze. Bronze isn't worth much at all. You're looking at most likely about 50 cents or less for the coin.
