Every society assigns certain activities and behaviors to people on the basis of sex -- women cook, men are soldiers, "men sweat, women glow", "a woman's place is in the home", it's all right for men to be aggressive, but women shouldn't be "pushy".

The rules change, they aren't fair, and they usually don't make much sense. But they're there, and when we see a man paying too much attention to his clothes, or a woman doing construction work (for example), we may be uncomfortable, because they are behaving "out of role" -- doing something associated with the "opposite" sex.

We learn about sex roles early in life: little boys aren't supposed to cry, little girls are made of "everything nice", so it can be stressful to see people "out of role". Some folks adjust to these changes more easily than others!

Feminism is a belief in gender equality and the advocacy for women's rights. In feminist theory, sex refers to biological differences between male and female, while gender refers to social and cultural roles assigned to each sex.
