Salazar Slytherin secretly built the Chamber of Secrets and hid a Basilisk inside after the other founders refused to only accept students Slytherin seemed worthy. The chamber was sealed and could only be opened by a Parselmouth. When that student came along he would be able to release the snake and purge the school of muggle-born students.

Lord Voldemort was the only person to ever open the chamber, once in 1952 and again in 1992. The second time he was possessing and acting through Ginny Weasley.

The legend began with the four Founders - Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. The four founders were great friends and formed a school together. Unfortunately, their ideas on who should be accepted to their school were vastly different.

Salazar Slytherin believed that they should only admit those students whose blood was pure, the other three founders disagreed. Eventually, Salazar Slytherin left the school. Legend claims that upon his departure, he created a hidden chamber within the school, one that could only be opened by the heir of Slytherin. Within this chamber he is said to have left a beast which, upon the opening of the chamber, would go forth into the halls of Hogwarts and rid the school of muggle-born students. Many headmasters searched the school for the chamber but since none was found, many considered the story a myth.

In 1942 the Chamber of Secrets was opened. Several muggle-born students were petrified and one died, Moaning Myrtle. After her death, Hogwarts was to be shut down. Tom Riddle framed Rubeus Hagrid and his pet Acromantula, Aragog. Hagrid was expelled and Hogwarts remained open. Tom Riddle then left part of his soul in the diary so that one day, the Chamber could be opened again.
