Elrond is a character from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. He appears in The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. Although he was a major figure in The Lord of the Rings, which took place in the Third Age, he was born during the First Age - making him over 6000 years old. Yes - Elves in Tolkien's works are essentially immortal - they don't die of old age unless they choose to become mortal, but they can be killed by accidents, wounds, poison, or disease. After 6000 years he was involved in so many major events that a full recounting of his known life needs a full-fledged article, not just a question answer. Some of the highlights though are:

  • Half-brother to Elros Tar-Minyatur, the first High King of Númenor - making him both father-in-law and a distant uncle (something like 36th-great uncle) to Aragorn who married his daughter Arwen. He was also a surrogate father to Aragorn, having raised him in his household after Aragorn's father Arathorn was killed a few years after Aragorn's birth
  • Fought as part of The Last Alliance of Elves and Men in the First War of the Ring during the Second Age. After Isildur cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron with the broken blade of Narsil (his father's legendary sword), Elrond warned Isildur that the One Ring had to be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, but at the last moment Isildur was sufficiently corrupted by the Ring that he kept it.
  • Possessor of Vilya, the mightiest of the Three Rings of the Elves
