A Silver Jubilee is the 25th year, a Golden jubilee is the 50th year. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977, 25 years on from her taking the throne as Queen in 1952. Her Coronation was the following year in 1953.

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee is going to be on the 3 June 2012. We will get a four day bank holiday but I don't think children will get a day off of school.

It means the celebration of the 25th anniversary of a particular event. In relation to Queen Elizabeth, she celebrated her 25th year as being Queen in 1977 and all of the activities surrounding that celebration were called the Silver Jubilee.

Traditions began with associating physical things with the length of marriages, with various milestones being given every more "valuable" designations. Year one is "paper", year five is "wood". "Silver" is the designation for the 25th year anniversary, "Gold" is 50th. Jubilee's tend to cover a longer period of time than just the day. For example Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 25th year as being Queen in 1977 and all of the activities surrounding that celebration were called the Silver Jubilee.

The concept of Jubilee by the way is Biblical (Leviticus 25:8-10), and is thousands of years old. The direction was that upon the passage of 7 cycles of 7 years, (49 years), all lands were left fallow, and all lands that had been given for use by others, whether sold, rented, whatever, had to be returned to the original tribe that owned it, thus restoring the land to its traditional owners. So often any 50th year anniversary has been associated with the concept of Jubilee.
