This question can not be answered in a simple paragraph... I recommend reading her book Respect for Acting. To give a small idea of her technique... she believed in being rather than acting. The characters were not characters to her they were a part of who she is. I hope this helps some and that you will research her. I am just now discovering who she is and I am amazed. She was a great actress and teacher and the updated book after "Respect for Acting," is called "A Challenge to the Actor". The fundamental idea that she taught was that all of the roles exist within us. Do not begin with external ideas of characters like so and so would play them. She called that presentational acting. She believed in finding how your unique personality responds to situations and events and use the pertinent sides of yourself that correspond to what the text or play says about the given character.
