J.K. Rowling's purpose was to entertain.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is significant in the series as it introduces ideas, characters and locations that become important later in the series.

This book is the first one to deal with the idea of blood purity, a major plot in the series as a whole. We also, although we are not aware of it at the time, witness the first destruction of Lord Voldemort's Horcrux (the diary) through use of a Basilisk fang - one of the only things capable of destroying a Horcrux because it is magically irreparable. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ron and Hermione go into the Chamber of Secrets during the final battle to retrieve some more fangs so they can destroy the other Horcruxes.

Furthermore, we are introduced to Polyjuice potion, a significant potion used in the series and meet Dobby, a character who saves Harry's life as well as many others in later books.
